Silver Xpress Mail System V4.01SE (Speech Edition)
(c) copyright 1992-94 Santronics Software
History
-------
4.01 - Added Option to Not detect Vocal Eyes automatically. Some systems
failed when Vocal Eyes was not available.
This documentation has three sections:
1) Silver Xpress Speech Friendly Interface Features.
2) How to Install Silver Xpress.
3) How to Use the Help System in Silver Xpress.
NOTE: Only when reading mail is there a special help key. The space bar
will tell you the special speech friendly interface keys.
NOTE: Vocal Eyes user, if you are using or planning to use the protected
mode version of Silver Xpress, please note that we have found that VOCAL
EYES cannot be loaded in HIGH memory. There is no problem when using the
real mode version.
Silver Xpress, The technology leader in Off-line Mail Systems! I love
to hear your input and suggestions. Remember, I can only do this with
your help and support.
1.0 Advance Speech Friendly Interface Feature Summary
-------------------------------------------------
Silver Xpress Speech Edition Supports any speech adapter system
which works with BIOS screen writes. In addition, Silver Xpress has
direct support for the VOCAL EYES speech system for sharper speech
operations.
1.1 Built-in option to use Talking Cursors for all menus, any pick list,
any configuration forms, hypertext help, and reader. If not used,
it works with your own talking cursor system by at least speaking
the first option or item of each component. In otherwords, Silver
Xpress allows you to keep your own talking cursor tracking system
and you STILL are able understand EXACTLY where you are at without
a review mode. However, the talking cursor system in Xpress is
superb in itself, and you do not need to turn on your Talking Cursor
System.
1.2 New reader scroll bar. Complete Cursor movement to allow easy reading
of the message or parts of the message.
1.3 Configurable Speech strings are various sessions. You can increase or
decrease the verbosity to get more information or make things
clearer.
- Menus.
- packet loader
- pick list
- message header
- Yes and No Prompts, Multiple Choice Fields
1.4 Complete Talking Help System, including a speech friendly hypertext
help based system.
1.5 New advanced TALKING QUOTER SYSTEM to assist in telling you WHO SAID
WHAT in quoted mail. This feature will INCREASE your productivity
in reading mail.
1.6 New Advanced READER GRAMMER MODE to read mail by words, sentences or
by paragraphs.
With the new READER GRAMMER MODE and TALKING QUOTER SYSTEM, you
now have TWO new ways to read your mail - Both guaranteed to
make SENSE of the BARRAGE of TEXT sent to speech adapters.
1.7 The new XPRESS speech friendly system also works under DesqView!!
2.0 How to First Install the Speech Friendly Interface in Silver Xpress?
To use the Silver Xpress Speech Friendly Interface (SFI), first start
the reader by passing the switch -SFI.
XPREAD -SFI
If you are using the Vocal-Eyes System, Xpress will automatically
detect it and automatically turn on the Speech Friendly System. The
-SFI is not required.
The reader, by default, will use its OWN TRACKING CURSOR so TURN
YOURS OFF. If you don't, you may hear double speech of menu items,
etc.
If you want to change the Speech Friendly Interface OPTIONS, GO INTO
THE CONFIGURATION VIDEO OPTIONS and POP UP THE SPEECH FRIENDLY
INTERFACE OPTIONS FORMS.
2.1 Using the Environment String SFI
If the the SFI environment string is detected, Xpress will look
for the word ON and turn on the speech friendly system. For
example;
SET SFI=ON
If you have VOCAL EYES, it may not work right with the PROTECTED MODE
VERSION OF THE READER. The Protected mode version has a P after the
version number, such as Version 3.02P or Version 4.00P. If this is
the case, you can use the BIOS keyword as part of the SFI environment
string. This will tell Xpress to not use VOCAL eyes for speaking.
For example:
SET SFI=ON BIOS
3.0 Try using the HELP system. It will speak to you. The help in Silver
Xpress is hypertext-based help. This means KEYWORDS, if any, are
highlighted, and more help will pop up if you PRESS ENTER on one
of these keywords. Sometimes there is only one keyword or none.
If there are keywords, the help system will tell you. For example,
after it reads the help screen, it may say something like:
Keywords Available beginning with option WHAT EVER.
If you hear this, use the up or down arrows to hear the keyword
options and, if you like, press ENTER to hear more information.
There is a SPECIAL HELP in the READER SECTION by hitting the
SPACEBAR. EVERYWHERE ELSE, F ONE IS THE HELP KEY.
4.0 Modifying the string Prompts.
The file XPREAD.SFI has many string prompts that can be changed by you.
This allows you to change the verbosity of the speech in Silver Xpress.
The keywords in the brackets must in upper case and must begin in
column 1.
